—For those who have never sung in a BYU-Provo select choir or the BYU-Idaho Collegiate Singers, auditions happen in three stages:
Stage 1: Preliminary audition with a graduate student
Sign-up sheets for preliminary auditions will be posted on the notice board at the east end of the E wing on the 3rd floor of the Harris Fine Arts Center. Interested students may sign up any day throughout the week including each of the four audition days. In this audition candidates will be required to sing a well-known hymn and some vocal exercises to determine voice quality and range. The auditioner will then tell you which choir(s) would be a possibility for you and instruct you to sign-up for the main audition with the relevant conductor(s). In the event that the auditioner considers that you do not yet have sufficient experience to sing in one of the select choirs, it is recommended that you sing in one of the sections of University Chorale. The Chorales are excellent mixed choirs, and singing in them will give you an opportunity to gain the experience necessary to audition for a select choir at a later time.
Stage 2: Main audition with Sister Hall
Sign-up sheets for the main auditions will be posted on the notice boards outside the offices of Dr. Staheli (E334 HFAC) and Sister Hall ( E332 HFAC). Before the audition the candidate is asked to fill out a form concerning past experiences with music. In this audition candidates will be asked to sing a prepared piece of their choice (a hymn will be fine). They will also be given tests for sight reading and tonal memory.
Stage 3: Call-back audition with the conductor of the choir for which you are being considered
Times for these auditions will be posted with the main audition sign-up sheets (See Stage 2) and will take place sometime during the first week of fall semester classes. All auditionees should note these times and be sure to keep them free as failure to attend the call-back audition FOR YOUR SECTION will result in immediate disqualification. You do not, however, have to sign-up for the call-back audition. Lists of those people who should attend call-backs will be posted on the morning of each call-back audition.
The call-back audition will take the form of a sectional rehearsal. Music from the semester’s repertoire will be taught, and candidates will be assessed on their ability to learn music quickly, to blend, to sing in tune, to take a risk, and to be a team-player.
—For those who HAVE sung in a BYU Provo select choir or BYU Idaho Collegiate Singers, the preliminary audition is not required. These candidates must fulfill stages 2 and 3, signing up directly for the main audition with the conductor of the choir(s) for which they would like to be considered.
